Originally, an AS was essentially a routing concept, but it later has become a synonym of "administrative domain", which refers to the set of logic and network resources under the control of a single administrative authority. Nowadays, the Internet consists of a large number of interconnected regional and national backbones provided by different Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
Unlike per-flow scheduling of packets, like in the mechanism proposed by the IIS framework, DS provides different service levels for traffic classes. This allows the aggregation of flows, which is fundamental to scalability. When there is no congestion, all packets are forwarded with the same priority. In the DS framework, there are three different possible services. • The best-effort service is the currently used approach in the Internet. There is no guarantee for QoS and everybody gets the service that the network is able to provide.
The final part of this chapter concentrates on the formalisation of the intra-domain tasks that every provider has to perform when allocating network resources. The focus is on the clustering scheme that has been deployed to represent bandwidth availability at different levels of abstraction. This enables the reduction of the complexity of resource allocation and pricing tasks. • The description of the NPI agent-based framework is given in Chapter 4. The first part introduces the conceptual model behind the NPI approach, including the definition of the different types of agents developed, their roles, their objectives and their internal architecture.
